Bridgehampton, New York

This is the all-American escape we've been waiting for. Arguably one of the most desirable destinations the world over, you'd be forgiven for thinking that The Hamptons are brimming with outstanding hotels – quite the opposite in fact. Topping Rose sits among wineries and lush fields, bordered by beaches with no other noteworthy hotels nearby. Thank goodness then, that it's pinch-yourself-perfect.

Whether arriving by Jitney, jet, rail or road, as you approach you'll be treated to the same nostalgic warmth that radiates from the charming clapboard exterior. The light and airy house rooms are preppy with a hint of old-world charm and they're no more than a full-bellied stumble from the restaurant - expect to be woken by scent of just-baked pastries each morning. Just a stroll across the lawn, the cottage rooms are altogether more contemporary (think cool Saarinen tables and sliding glass doors) and each has its own terrace, set to entice you out for a late-night tipple or two.

Food plays an enormous part here; the menu is bursting with sustainable produce from Topping Rose Farm and nearby ranches. Guests are encouraged to go apple picking and return with their spoils which will be whipped up into a cinnamon-topped pie by morning. If you prefer your fruit in liquid form, Wolffer Estate is a must visit, as is Ocean Road Beach which can be reached easily by bicycle. Intent on exploring a little further? Swing by reception where they'll swap your driving license for the keys to a shiny black Lexus 4x4. Quite possibly the best perk ever?

Best room: The House Suite feels homely with views across to the orchard. Its private library complete with roaring log fire is just right for curling up with a gripping read and a glass of red once the sun has gone in.

Dress code: Keep things classic with Ralph Lauren and the odd Orlebar Brown piece thrown in for good measure.
