A stunning refuge just moments from the hubbub of the city, Tigmiza is tucked away in Marrakech’s lush Palmeraie. A clean-cut, minimalistic style echoes through the cluster of ochre-hued buildings, punctuated by dark-wood latticework, printed curtains and artful traditional rugs.

Bordered with banana trees, each suite, chalet and villa takes on a striking central theme; from Zen to Jardin Majorelle, they’re all done remarkably well. Bedrooms are sumptuous and the bathrooms – concealed behind intricately carved shutters - are a sight to behold; double basins set into heavy marble counters, ornate gilded mirrors and jars brimming with Moroccan roses make for an otherworldly feel.

Leaving without taking the time to spa would be almost sinful. Enveloped in sky blue tiling, the tranquil subterranean space is the ideal antidote to the burning midday sun. Prefer to cool down outdoors? Take your pick between the two sizeable swimming pools.

Inside track

Best room: With white walls, bright painterly fabrics and palm-shaded private pools, the villas are superb. Number seven has a serene feel to it while number twelve is dramatic and opulent.
