This former jazz house packs a big punch for a small property. Inside the old tube station façade, interiors are dominated by a wealth of chandeliers and mirrors, evoking a sense of splendour with a nod to the Roaring Twenties. Endless marble floors are upstaged only by the staff, who are charming but not sickeningly so and cigar aficionados will be bowled over by the bespoke humidor – it’s the largest in Europe.
No expense has been spared in decking out the 36 bedrooms. Swanky Art-Deco design is brought bang up to date with contemporary touches; bedside panels control everything from the lights to the sliding curtains while the slick, user-friendly tablet makes for hassle-free room service. Bathrooms are enveloped in marble and play host to heritage-style silver taps, Hermes toiletries and waffle cotton bathrobes.
The lack of spa is more than made up for by the Jazz Lounge, where musicians share the space with a Steinway grand piano, entertaining guests as they lap up seasonal Italian fare.
Best room: The Churchill Suite. With its own seventh floor terrace and a private staircase, it’s a winner.
