Expectations are raised when you arrive via a private courtyard to an ambient drawing room replete with wall-to-wall bookcases and a roaring fire. Velvet armchairs, Gerald Scarf paintings hung in regency-style frames and intimate corners aplenty make for a refined setting with bags of character. Even down to the finer details – butterfly-filled bell jars line the shelves and desserts are served on handpicked antique novels – Scarfes Bar not only gets it right but does so with ease.

Asian-inspired nibbles in the form of Bengali vegetable chops and melt-in-the-mouth lobster momos complement the carefully curated drinks list wonderfully and boy what a list it is. Ginger liqueur and signature spices mingle with a generous dose of rum in the mighty Diplomatic Immunity and if beer’s your thing, staff are on hand to help you select the swill du jour.
