Fit for a King
As palatial as they come, this haven in the heart of the Jma al Fna is an icon of terracotta and beaten bronze perfection. Entering through the rose-hued arches, the sound of birdsong fills air. The open-air courtyard is rich with colour, gilded and impossibly glorious, with delicate swathes of chiffon to punctuate the mosaics. Serviced by a network of subterranean tunnels, this is discreet grandeur at its finest, and the staff are some of the most attentive you’ll come across. Outside in the vast grounds, the pool is bordered by greenery and dotted with elegant loungers in soothing shades of blue and lavender.
Each three-storey riad is as immaculate as the next. With intricately carved dark wood panelling, hand-painted shutters and chandeliers that glisten in the sunlight. The all-marble bathrooms are nothing short of magnificent – from the huge swim-in tub to the solid silver taps. For downtime, head up to your private roof terrace, complete with plunge pool, oversized terracotta planters and views across the red city.
Surrounded by orange-scented gardens, the spa is really quite something. Its blanched palette and soaring lattice atrium make for the perfect antidote to the glaring African sun, while the treatment menu is brimming with offerings from Sisley and Dr Hauschka. Food wise, both of the restaurants – one French, one Moroccan - are superb and breakfast here is something not to be missed.
