Resplendent and regal, this red city sprawl is as palatial as they come. Veiled balconies look down on courtyards adorned with hand-carved stucco work and labyrinthine alleys lead through to room after room of splendour; each with commanding marble-clad columns and the heady scent of roses lingering in the air.
Though grand it may be, La Sultana exists as an oasis of calm in the heart of the Medina, with an atmosphere so serene, heading out into the hustle and bustle can prove tough. Approached through jade green corridors, the spa is spectacular to say the least, and at sunset, the vast roof terrace - peppered with objets d’arts and greenery – is a great spot to sip mint tea and reflect on the day.
In each of the bedrooms, juicy oranges await guests upon arrival alongside sweet pastries and macarons. Twinkling chandeliers hang from high-vaulted ceilings, drawing the eye up past the elaborately carved walls; crisp Egyptian cotton consumes the enormous beds and the sound of birdsong trickles in through the shutters. If you were looking for paradise, it’s right here.
Best room: The Panthère suite - its cool, monochrome palette is enlivened by an excellent pair of antique wooden pillars and the bathroom’s step-up tub makes taking the plunge all the more worthwhile.
Dress code: Light and airy fabrics worn with style.
