Best Foot Forward

It’s official: we are obsessed with trainers. Previously the things of sporting exploits, kicks continue to have cult-catwalk status

Isabel Marant claimed one of the first forays into high-fashion trainers with a wedged offering, then came trailblazer Phoebe Philo and her Celine selection. More recently, King of haute couture, Karl Lagerfeld sent tweed versions down the Chanel runway - a far cry from ten a penny, crisp-white Stan Smiths. And now Christopher Kane has updated the nostalgic, velcro kicks of childhood playgrounds, and Nike has even hinted that forthcoming technology will allow trainer geeks to 3D print their own designs.

It’s a rubber-soled revolution! So devotees rejoice - whether 90s style, sports luxe or catwalk couture, designers are striding comfortably to keep trainers perennially cool.
